Upper School Students Honored at Model UN Conference

Crossroads team named Best Small Delegation at Northwestern University event.
Upper School students at Crossroads traveled to Illinois last month for the 16th annual Northwestern University Model United Nations conference, bringing back to campus several prestigious awards despite having their return flight delayed due to inclement weather.

The students earned the collective title of Best Small Delegation, an impressive feat considering their position as one of the conference’s smallest teams, while four students secured individual awards. Senior Hugo Budd won his second Best Delegate honor, a prize he also claimed at UCLA earlier this year, while juniors Celeste Mancia and Ariana Kalili received honorable mention and Zane Hankin garnered a diplomacy award.

“I won the [award] for my committee, which means that I debated most in alignment with my given position on foreign policy,” Zane says. “I feel honored winning it because it shows that all of the time I spent researching my country’s position really paid off.”

This is not the first time Crossroads’ Model UN team has been successful, as consistent excellence has resulted in numerous victories in recent years. Says Upper School history teacher Paul Case, a trip chaperone: “Our team has won at least one award at every conference we have attended.”

The Crossroads MUN team looks forward to adding to its recent accolades while building on the camaraderie the participants experienced during their trip.

“I’ve gone on three travel conferences for the Crossroads Model UN team,” Zane says. “We have had so much fun exploring Berkeley, Chicago and Washington D.C. with not only our fellow club members but also with our chaperones. We become one big family for a week.”
