Equity & Justice Institute Speaker Named a Woman of the Year

Crossroads parent Emiliana Guereca honored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
On March 13, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Commission for Women celebrated the achievements of 13 remarkable women at the 38th Annual Women of the Year Awards and Commemorative Celebration, recognizing their dedication to serving and uplifting other women. Included was Crossroads parent Emiliana Guereca, whose sons are in fifth and seventh grade. Other winners include Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

Emiliana currently co-chairs the Art of the Doodle event, the School’s spring fundraiser benefiting the Affordability Program (formerly known as financial aid), which is scheduled for May 6. She also serves as the co-chair of Juntos, the School’s Latinx family alliance. In 2021, she discussed her work as co-executive director and founder of the Women’s March Foundation as a featured speaker of the School’s Younes and Soraya Nazarian Equity & Justice Distinguished Lecture Series

An immigrant from Mexico who grew up in the Cabrini-Green housing projects of Chicago, Emiliana was a successful entrepreneur running large-scale commercial events when she and several other volunteers began plans for Los Angeles’ first Women’s March in 2017. Since then, Emiliana has been a leading organizer behind the three subsequent Women’s Marches in Los Angeles. She also helped establish a political branch of the foundation called Women’s March Action, which focuses on non-partisan education, civic engagement and advocacy around issues affecting women around the country.

A portion of the proceeds from the Commemorative Celebration luncheon, which was hosted at the Sheraton Grand Los Angeles in Downtown Los Angeles, will benefit education scholarships for young, at-risk women. Click here to learn more about the awards and to see a list of other honorees.
