Green Wave’s Guide to Curbing Your Carbon Footprint

Seniors Georgia Kennedy-Bailey and Jae Pinkner, the Green Wave Club co-presidents, provide 10 steps for making a difference in 2021.
The Crossroads Green Wave Club is dedicated to creating change through tangible action. Green Wave is a youth-centered organization that is a branch of the Malibu Foundation, which was started after the devastating Woolsey Fire in 2018. The Crossroads branch was started shortly after with the intention of fighting climate disasters. We currently have six members: Georgia Kennedy-Bailey, Jae Pinkner, Sankofa Attaway, Oak Jarvis, Sadie Tanner Rose, Annika Blomquist and Caden Weinhouse.

California has been on the front lines of climate disasters as we have faced terrible wildfires over the past few years. These fires are a direct result of climate change, one of the most pressing issues of our time. We are confident that individual action can play a huge role in helping to save our planet, so we need your help! Our club has researched and compiled a list of 10 easy steps you can take to help stop climate change and limit your carbon footprint! We really hope you can all make the effort to make these small changes to your lifestyle, and hopefully take your climate work even further.

  1. Make a donation to an environmental organization!
  2. Replace all single-use plastics with reusable items (bags, water bottles, straws, etc.).
  3. Shop locally and organically.
  4. Reduce red meat consumption.
  5. Recycle and compost.
  6. Grow your own fruits and vegetables.
  7. Avoid driving and try walking/biking/carpooling as much as possible.
  8. Turn off lights, TV, AC, etc. when you are not using them.
  9. Switch to as many energy-efficient appliances as possible (look for the Energy Star label).
  10. Shop online from eco-conscious stores or thrift stores.

Thank you all for doing your part to help the environment! Feel free to reach out to Co-Presidents Georgia Kennedy-Bailey or Jae Pinkner if you have any questions or if you are an Upper School student and would like to contribute further by joining the Green Wave Club!
