EOE Faculty ( Environmental & Outdoor Education Program)

Full time , 10 month Faculty Position

School & Program
Crossroads School for the Arts and Sciences is a progressive K-12 independent school in Santa Monica, CA. The school was built upon five basic commitments: to academic excellence; to the arts; to the greater community; to the development of a student population of social, economic, and racial diversity; and to the development of each student’s physical well-being and full human potential.  
Within the school, the Environmental Outdoor Education (EOE) program encourages students to appreciate the natural world, take responsibility for their actions, interact cooperatively with others, and develop initiative while making environmentally responsible decisions.  This is accomplished through a variety of programs for grades 4 through 12.  Courses range from day trips to ten-day expeditions, all with common curricular themes of human development, outdoor science, and technical skills.  
We seek educators qualified and committed to outdoor education and human development, and interested in actively contributing to a progressive and diverse school community.  Candidates must have a passion for educating the whole child, a commitment to actively furthering DEIJ initiatives in the outdoors, and a love for sharing the natural world with young people.

Overall Responsibilities
This Faculty member manages program enrollment, parent communication, permitting and reservations.  The person in this role is responsible for leadership and management of all courses while on campus and in the field.  This educator will be a caretaker of EOE’s mission, and is charged with stewarding and supporting the program and Crossroads students.

Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Primary office presence and management (answer phones, communicate with parents, faculty, administration, and work on on-going projects and program preparation as needed) 
  • Make campsite reservations for all courses and secure necessary permits
  • Build and maintain all webpages using school software platform and slideshows
  • Assist in building all online forms: Enrollment, Release of Claims, Medical Forms, etc.
  • Manage and support with marketing including: promotional emails to the school community, and presenting trips to families
  • Maintain healthy relationships with all outfitters, collect contracts and certificates of insurance
  • Manage and update student enrollment for all programs
  • Plan and manage the EOE calendar
  • Manage eoe@xrds.org email account
  • Represent EOE within the school and in the outdoor education and experiential education communities
  • Assist with the development of curriculum, activities, and itineraries for new and existing programs
  • Attend Crossroads School Risk Management Committee meetings
  • Design and publish student journals, instructor booklets and other curriculum packets
  • Complete all pre and post course documentation
  • Review and follow up on incidents, accidents, and near misses from program courses

Program Logistics Leadership and Management :
  • Support with program logistics, pre-trip packing and post trip clean up as necessary
  • Contribute to trip debriefs and evaluations
  • Maintain awareness of student medical and dietary information and respond accordingly
  • Assist in developing and implementing the vision for long term program planning
  • Collaborate with Elementary, Middle, and Upper School Faculty as needed
  • Supervise and evaluate contracted EOE field instructors
  • Assist with all aspects of clothing and equipment rental fleet

Teaching and Curriculum Development:
  • Lead or Course Direct overnight and day trips each year (approximately 40-60 Field Days)
  • Responsible for risk management in both pre-trip design and on site programming
  • Train field instructors on EOE policies and procedures, and emergency protocols
  • Review effectiveness of educational goals and curriculum for program
  • Teach HOT curriculum: Human Development, Outdoor Science, Technical Skills
  • Responsible for submitting grades through BlackBaud for each US student on a trip
  • Teach optional classes as interested, and assist with after school classes as necessary
Required Qualifications : 
  • College graduate, BA/ BS
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification (WFR) and CPR
  • Desire and commitment to living in the Los Angeles area mid-August through mid June each year
  • Commitment to actively furthering DEIJ initiatives and practices in the field and office
  • Proven record of and continued commitment to decolonizing the outdoor experience
  • Team oriented; interested in clear, transparent communication and collaboration
  • Experience as a wilderness risk manager in an institutional setting 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, Prezi, and Google systems
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Strong ability to track and manage complex systems
  • Proficiency in a variety of technical outdoor skills including: base camping, backpacking, rock climbing, sea and whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, snow travel, etc.
  • Trip planning, logistics experience, and/or outdoor program administration experience (3+ years)
  • Ability and desire to spend 40-60 days a year in the field plus working in an an intimate office setting
  • Strong work ethic, high quality work, and impeccable moral code
  • Passion for teaching, and current personal participation in outdoor activities



Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an educator at a K-12 private school, college, or university
  • Experience securing permits with NPS, USFS, and other government agencies
  • Certifications: ACA or BCU whitewater kayaking/ canoe, AMGA SPI climbing or higher, AIARE Level 1 or higher, ACA Swiftwater Rescue Technician, EMT or WEMT, LNT Master Educator, Mindfulness, etc.
  • BA or higher degree related to education, outdoor recreation, administration, or similar
  • History of participating in NOLS Wilderness Risk Management Conference
  • Fluency in multiple languages

Salary & Benefits Compensation commensurate with experience.  Comprehensive benefits package available.  This is a 10 month, full time position.
