EMMI Alum Joins Current Students for AYS Show

Andrew von Oeyen ’98, a critically acclaimed concert pianist, recently performed with the prestigious American Youth Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles. Under the direction of the distinguished French Maestro Emmanuel Villaume, Andrew performed Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G and Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra.
 
He was in good company on Nov. 17, as he joined two current Crossroads students who belong to the 100-musicians-strong American Youth Symphony Orchestra: 12th-graders Christine Lee (first violin) and Celia Daggy (viola).
 
Andrew, a former Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute student, has earned several accolades and honors throughout the years. In 1999, he won the prestigious Gilmore Young Artist Award and took First Prize in the Leni Fe Bland Foundation National Piano Competition in 2001. Since his debut at age 16 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Finnish conductor-composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, Andrew has excelled in a broad spectrum of concerto repertoire, including Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Ligeti, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Schumann and Tchaikovsky, among others.
 
After graduating from Crossroads, Andrew studied at Columbia University and The Juilliard School. He’s currently recording a concerto album with the Prague Philharmonia and has performed with several renowned collectives, such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, National Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony, Grant Park Orchestra, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Marseille, Geneva Chamber Orchestra and Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra.
