Silent Student Rally Honors Victims of Anti-Transgender Violence
Demonstration was organized by members of Middle School PRIDE Club.
During snack break in the Alley on Nov. 15, Middle School students gathered in the courtyard of the Science Education & Research Facility, each standing silently and holding a piece of paper bearing the name, picture and story of a life cut short.
The moving demonstration at Crossroads was organized by members of the Middle School PRIDE Club ahead of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is held annually Nov. 20 to honor transgender people around the world whose lives have been lost to anti-transgender violence.
The silent protest was arranged to coincide with Transgender Awareness Week, which aims to raise the visibility of the issues faced by trans people.
Two of the participating students held a banner that bore the tagline, “WE WILL NOT BE ERASED.”
“On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the transgender people we have lost and reflect on their lives and their loved ones’ memories,” the banner read. “Transgender people in the U.S., especially transgender women of color, are impacted by fatal violence at a greater rate than all other groups. While we focus on this violence ... we must also actively work every day to end it.”
Following the demonstration, the memorial was put on display in the Projects Pavilion of the science building.
