The science building is unveiled as employees return to campus.
With the new school year rapidly approaching, Head of School Bob Riddle gave an inspiring welcome-back speech to faculty, staff and administrators on Aug. 31. in front of the newly completed Science Education & Research Facility.
During his remarks, Bob introduced the returning employees to their new colleagues and mentioned the continuing equity and justice work the School is undertaking. Over the summer, 14 faculty, staff and administrators participated in a weeklong workshop to discuss diversity and inclusivity and Crossroads. The workshop was facilitated by Jones Inclusive Leadership and is part of the School’s ongoing commitment to promoting equity and justice at the School and out in the world.
Bob spoke about the four-year journey leading up to the unveiling of the Science Education & Research Facility and thanked everyone who had a hand in its creation. At the conclusion of his remarks, faculty and staff toured the new facility, which is the new home of the Middle and Upper School science programs. The building will also be a learning tool for students studying a variety of other disciplines.
The Special Projects Pavilion in particular will allow for interdisciplinary projects among various departments. Art Department member Pam Posey is one of many faculty members looking forward to the possibilities afforded by the space.
“The Pavilion’s rooftop space has endless opportunities for creative exploration and expression,” she said. “We can study perspective, draw the long and short views, and talk about depicting space from the point of view of the building, as well as from the point of view from the courtyard. In short, we already have way too many exciting ideas to explore and can’t wait for the students to get here to add to the ‘must do’ list.”
