Anti-Racism Advocate Visits Crossroads

Speaker, author and educator Tim Wise spoke to the Crossroads community on Jan. 27 and 28 about white privilege, encouraging more frank and open discussions about race in our classrooms and homes. Wise pointed out the hidden dangers of “colorblindness” and illuminated the ways in which people of color face ongoing discrimination in ways both overt and subtle.
Wise gave presentations tailored to his audience of K-12 faculty/staff, parents and Upper School students. During his speech at an Upper School assembly, Wise reminded students that the leaders of the civil rights movement and other socially progressive movements were typically young people, and challenged them to take up the cause of equality.
Among the nation’s most prominent anti-racism essayists and educators, Wise is the author of six books, including his highly acclaimed memoir “White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son.”
