Upper-Schoolers get hands-on experience finding solutions to global problems while in New York.
Twelve Crossroads Upper-Schoolers traveled to New York on May 11 to participate in the Global Classrooms International Model United Nations Conference, which brought together students from 26 international capitals and 22 states in the country.
The participants included 12th-graders Jack Kessler and Hannah Nasseri; 11th-graders Cody Benfield, Isabel Fields, Olympia Nagel-Caland and Oscar Sarkes; 10th-graders Lily Alexander, Isabella Fis, Kayla Kane, Jared Press and Sofia Sears; and ninth-grader Lucy Davis.
At the closing ceremony, four of the Crossroads delegations groups walked away with an Honorable Mention Award, given to delegates recognized for their diplomatic performance, and one delegation walked away with the Best Delegation Award, given to the delegation that demonstrated excellence in representation and performance throughout the conference.
Over the course of three days, more than 2,000 student delegates participated in rigorous international diplomacy while simulating 29 United Nations committees of global magnitude and significance. Students had the opportunity to develop their skills in global literacy, critical thinking and consensus building as they worked tirelessly to understand and find solutions to problems that cross borders and affect millions of lives. The conference opening and closing ceremonies were held at the General Assembly of the United Nations headquarters, where students got to experience sitting in the actual room where global resolutions are made.
The Upper-Schoolers debated, negotiated and showcased their passion and drive to make our world a better place. They also visited the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, experienced New York City and made new friendships with other likeminded students from all over the globe.
Crossroads faculty members Grace Hayek and Gina Aumock chaperoned the trip.
