The award reflects the School’s commitment to sustainability.
Crossroads recently earned a 2015 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The annual awards recognize the country’s leading green power users for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s voluntary green power market.
Upper School science teacher Steve Lux, co-chair of the Green Schools Alliance Renewable Energy Credit Purchasing Consortium, traveled to Washington, D.C., to accept the Green Power Purchasing Award on behalf of the School at the Oct. 19 ceremony, presented at the Renewable Energy Markets Conference.
Crossroads’ environmental sustainability efforts and leadership includes our purchase of 100 percent renewable energy. The School is currently purchasing nearly 2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which, according to the EPA, is equivalent to the electricity use of nearly 200 average American homes annually.
“We’re honored to be recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency with this prestigious award,” said Head of School Bob Riddle. “Crossroads School is proud of our significant purchase of green power and our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint.”
Other award recipients in the various categories include Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., National Hockey League, General Motors, New Belgium Brewing Company, Intel Corp. and Kohl’s Department Stores.
“These organizations are leading the way in cutting U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, acting on climate change and protecting public health by using billions of kilowatt-hours of green power annually,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “The Green Power Leadership Award winners demonstrate that green power is a smart and accessible business investment that reduces emissions while growing the renewable energy market and spurring innovation.”
Crossroads also ranks No. 19 on the EPA’s Top 30 K-12 Schools list.
