Crossroads Celebrates 40 Years of Athletics

Inaugural Hall of Fame ceremony and alumni sports reunion bring Roadrunners back to campus.
Crossroads celebrated 40 years of athletics June 7 with the induction of seven individuals and one team into its newly created Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame ceremony, which took place in the Community Room before 100+ family, friends and supporters, was preceded by the unveiling of the Hall of Fame display case by Athletics directors from past to present—Rich Makoff, Chuck Ice, Paul Gibbs and Ira Smith. Head of School Bob Riddle opened the ceremony with an introduction of Crossroads Athletics and its development throughout the past 40 years. Ira Smith then explained the background of the Hall of Fame and its significance to the School.

The first inductee, Friend of Athletics Paul Cummins, who co-founded Crossroads, shared the invaluable life lessons he gained through participation in athletics and the importance of such competition in any educational institution. Coach Daryl Roper introduced his stand-out 1997 basketball team, explaining the unique contribution each player made.

The gracious acceptance speeches by Steve Solomon, Jamila Banks, Austin Croshere, Jen Abramson Anderson, Yasmeen Yamini-Benjamin and Baron Davis offered personal accounts of their experiences at Crossroads and the impact the School continues to make on their lives today. The stories of sportsmanship, competition, tenacity, friendship, strength and determination were awe-inspiring and not soon to be forgotten by those in attendance.

The celebration continued the next day at the All-Class Sports Reunion Barbecue, held on the 21st Street campus. Former athletes and coaches from as recently as 2013 to as far back as 1979 came together to celebrate four decades of Roadrunner Athletics.
