Students Win Awards in Scholastic Writing Competition
Three Crossroads students have been recognized in the West Region-at-Large competition of the 2014 Scholastic Writing Awards.
Three Crossroads students have been recognized in the West Region-at-Large competition of the 2014 Scholastic Writing Awards. Yoko Rosenbaum, Maya Sokolow and Zita Surprenant each submitted their work into the competition at the recommendation of their teachers.
The winning levels for the competition included Gold Key Awards, Silver Key Awards or Honorable Mention Awards; students awarded at any of these levels receive a certificate and pin for their work. All pieces that won on the Gold Key level will now be entered into in the national competition.
Freshman Yoko Rosenbaum won a Gold Key Award for her science fiction/fantasy piece, “When Death Comes Knocking.” She also won an Honorable Mention Award for “Sticks and Stones,” a poetry piece. Junior Maya Sokolow won a Silver Key Award for her personal essay/memoir, “I Choose Life,” and freshman Zita Surprenant won a Silver Key Award for her poem, “Goodnight Franny.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards dates to 1923 and is the longest-running recognition program for creative teens in the United States and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. Past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King and John Updike.
