Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute (EMMI) Zipper International Scholars Program

Almost since the beginning of Crossroads, the school has housed an exceptional, internationally known classical music conservatory program. Currently known as the Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute (EMMI), the program evolved from the school’s Music Major founded in 1978. Alumni of our program occupy key orchestral positions in the world’s greatest orchestras, as well as active careers as solo and recital artists.

For decades Mary Ann Cummins, the program’s founder, and Dr. Herbert Zipper recruited the most promising young musicians from Asia and invited them to study at Crossroads School. Crossroads is excited to honor the legacy of Dr. Herbert Zipper by launching the Zipper International Scholars Program. This program is offered to a small group of artistically gifted string musicians from countries in Asia to wish to study at Crossroads. Key facets of the program include:

  • An intimate, elite pre-professional music program: Students perform in a chamber orchestra, chamber groups, and study music theory and performance practice with Crossroads’ world class music faculty. The school also arranges private lessons for Zipper Scholars with the best studio string teachers in Los Angeles as well as connecting them with audition opportunities for the city’s best young artist orchestras.

  • A progressive, nationally recognized day school program. Zipper Scholars receive a true American education with American students. Crossroads is recognized as having one of the most innovative curricula in the nation. Students are able to find their academic passions, as well as have life-changing experiences in our Life Skills, Environmental Outdoor Education, and Service Learning programs. Crossroads offers a full college counseling program to its students with an impressive slate of college destinations.

  • A home away from home: Housing is included in the cost of the program. Crossroads owns a large family home to house our students as well as homestays. We employ house parents who are nurturing and active in our student’s lives.Transportation to and from the home is provided via Crossroads bus service. Crossroads will provide the I-20 visas for Zipper Scholars.

  • ESL (English as a Second Language). Crossroads arranges ESL services for students who need it. This can be provided during the school day as well as after school.

Admission to Zipper International Scholars

  1. Submit Prescreening Audition Email and Video
Please email Grace Park, Director of K-12 Strings and Director of EMMI, with a URL link to your audition video (YouTube, etc.) as well as the information below. We strongly prefer multiple solo pieces that highlight fast, technical playing as well as lyrical, slow passages. A successful audition will result in applicants being invited for a live audition and admissions interview in Los Angeles or Seoul, Korea.

  2. Complete the Crossroads School Admissions Application
Once a prescreening audition has been approved, families may complete the Crossroads Admissions Application. Instructions are easy to follow. Crossroads requires the SSAT for international applicants, as well as the TOEFL. The SSAT can be administered in Los Angeles if needed. There is no minimum score on either test to gain admission to the school. Academic transcripts must be presented in official English translation.

  3. Admission Decisions
Applicants will receive their admission decision online on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 5:00pm PST. International students who are accepted to the Institute will receive additional instructions for completing the Declaration of Finances form which is required to complete the I-20 and begin the student visa application process.
