Students Represent Crossroads at Local Art Invitational

Exhibit showcases student creativity in a variety of disciplines.
Eighth-grade student Emma Raff likes to draw on personal connections for her artistic inspiration, so she honored her love of reading and writing by making an open book in ceramics and crafting an original poem about fairytales entitled, “You Don’t Need a Forest.”

Her passion hasn’t gone unnoticed. Emma was one of 11 visual arts students from Crossroads to have artwork on display at the Marlborough School Art Invitational, which showcased their creativity in a variety of artistic disciplines.

“I loved that my work was placed in an environment filled with so many talented and dedicated artists,” says Emma, who attended the invitational March 9. “I am definitely interested in pursuing the arts later in my life, and I think this show was a great start.”

The exhibit also featured work by Crossroads seniors Shannon Munn (animation) and Joji Baratelli (film); juniors Daniela Contreras (digital art), Emmet Abrams (film) and Thevi Jean-Louis (sculpture); sophomores Lola Hakim (photography), Yetla Martinez (ceramics) and Grant Choi (sculpture); and freshmen Julia Stein-De Turck (ceramics) and Jack Slavin (sculpture).

“The students were selected by their own faculty to represent the School, so it’s an honor to be chosen,” Visual Arts teacher Leslie Rosdol says. The event also gives students an opportunity to see the work of their peers from other schools.

The invitational strengthened Emma’s confidence in her own artistic sensibilities. And it was just the latest accomplishment of her time at Crossroads, where she has improved as an artist and become more invested in her work.

“Crossroads allows me to be independent, especially when it comes to arts classes,” she says. “There are so many classes to choose from and many chances for me to thrive as an artist and student. This School is filled with such amazing teachers who are extremely invested in the class they teach and happy to help me grow.”
