Crossfire Honored in National Awards Competition

Student news magazine named Crown Finalist by Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
Crossroads School’s student news magazine, Crossfire, was named a Crown Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in a competition featuring dozens of student newspapers and magazines from across the country.
 
Crossfire—which is written and produced by students under the direction of advisors Nicky Loomis, Upper School journalism teacher, and Upper School Director Roxanne Zazzaro—was honored for its submission of four separate spreads from issues of the magazine that were published last school year.
 
The award will be presented in March in New York City.
 
“We all spent hours researching, reporting, writing and editing our articles, and it means so much that our hard work has been recognized by such a prestigious competition,” says senior Julianna Yablans.
 
Crossfire’s winning entry featured several pieces from its November 2016 politics issue, including thoughtfully crafted op-eds by Julianna and senior Dante Vaisbort about the 2016 presidential candidates and a voting guide by then-managing editor Eve Bloomfield ’17.
 
The news magazine was also recognized for the cover of its March 2017 issue, which was designed by Grace Attanasio ’17 and Sophia Deutsch ’17. The cover features a nude Barbie doll with plastic surgery marks beneath the header, “Beauty is the beast: Examining the effects of beauty standards on students.”
 
Also packaged in Crossfire’s submission was a December column in “The Vault,” a transcribed op-ed about the School’s culture that was written by Crossroads students in 1984.
 
“With the media constantly evolving right before our eyes, it is as important as ever for us to express and voice our opinions on a variety of platforms,” Julianna says. “The job of a journalist is to question and report the truth—something that is often difficult for young students to do. Interviewing has given me the ability to question with confidence, and it has given me skills that I have used in and outside of the classroom.”
