Crossroads Assemblies Set Tone for 2017-18 School Year

Convocation, first Gathering mark new beginnings as students return to campus.
Brimming with excitement for the school year ahead, Crossroads students gathered Friday for special assemblies on their respective campuses.

At Convocation on the 21st Street Campus basketball court, Head of School Bob Riddle acknowledged current events as he urged students in grades 6-12 to serve as role models in their social circles and larger communities.

“Today, more than ever, it is necessary for us to create a space here at Crossroads that we can all view as our sanctuary—a sanctuary where each of us, no matter who we are or how we identify or where we come from, can feel safe, can feel supported, can feel respected, and can even feel loved,” he said. “Every single person in our community is a unique and valuable member.”

Returning seniors Isaac Pross and Stella Sekoff were introduced as student body co-presidents, and they encouraged students to take advantage of the many opportunities at Crossroads while offering words of advice to members of each grade.

“It feels great,” senior Peter Stern said of being back at school as he hung out in the Alley after the assembly. “I love being here, and I’m looking forward to getting to know the other kids and teachers.”

The Elementary School kicked off its year that morning with a special Gathering assembly, where Director Debbie Wei welcomed families back to school and Norton Campus staffers joined together on the Community Room stage to sing a rendition of “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”

Students in grades K-5 then learned and practiced the sign language for a popular Crossroads song: “From you I receive / To you I give / Together we share / And from this we live.”
