EMMI Delights Audiences with Fall Performances

The Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute (EMMI) kicked off the 2014-15 season with two exciting concerts. The Fall Orchestra Concert was held on Nov. 9 in Roth Hall. Students played a selection of works by 20th-century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, contemporary American composer John Corigliano and American film composer Bernard Herrmann. Coming close on the heels of Halloween, the orchestra gave a dynamic and chilling performance of Hermann’s classic theme for the 1960 Hitchcock thriller “Psycho,” whose jabbing strings have been the de facto sound of “slasher” movies ever since.

EMMI held its monthly solo recital in Roth Hall on Nov. 12. As it so happened, the six students who performed at the recital are all brand new to Crossroads this school year. The four violinists and two pianists performed works by composers including Mozart, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninov. To learn about upcoming EMMI concerts, visit xrds.org/EMMI.
