Crossroads Students, Alumna Receive 2019 YoungArts Awards
Competition honors talented musicians and artists from across the country.
Three Crossroads juniors and one recent graduate received awards in the 2019 YoungArts competition, which recognizes talented high school musicians and artists from across the country.
Eleventh-grader Lucas Wurman entered in the voice category and was named a YoungArts finalist, making him one of just 163 students in the nation to earn the organization’s highest distinction this year. He also won merit recognition as a singer-songwriter.
“I have always been confident in my singing, but winning on such a grand scale was extremely surprising and still quite hard to comprehend,” Lucas says. “Overall, I now have a new sense of ambition to continue working on my singing.”
Crossroads junior Leo Major received merit honors for classical music composition, and violist Andy Park earned honorable mention in the classical music category.
Crossroads alumna Anna Abondolo ’18 was acknowledged as a YoungArts winner for the third year in a row, this time as a merit honoree for double bass in the jazz category.
The annual competition provides winners with financial, professional and artistic development opportunities, according to a YoungArts press release. All of the Crossroads honorees are eligible to participate in a regional YoungArts program in Los Angeles in March.
“Crossroads has always been very supportive of my desire to excel as a musician,” Lucas says. “The School has always given me opportunities to perform and embrace my musical identity.”
