PS Science

PS Science is a project of the Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation (CCOF). CCOF is dedicated to bridging schools and the larger civic, educational and cultural communities and creating programs in support of underserved children, youth and families and their education. CCOF created PS Science to captivate young minds and inspire a lifelong passion for science. This weekly science program serves elementary classrooms in Title I schools where science was previously rarely if ever taught.
PS Science enables under-served children and their teachers to:
  • See beauty, wonder, and infinite opportunity
  • Do science through active exploration and collaboration
  • Know the joy of discovery and the power of knowledge

In 2004, CCOF began the first stages of developing the PS Science program as a response to a recurring theme in public school education—the need for meaningful early elementary school science education. Elementary classrooms in low-income areas are twice as likely as their more affluent peers to exclude science from their regular curriculum.  CCOF conceived of PS Science to fill this void by providing content and experience rich science instruction to both students and their teachers. Classroom teachers are mentored during the lessons and trained to eventually take over instruction of the program. CCOF first piloted P.S. Science in 2006. Saint Anne School in Santa Monica was the pilot site of the PS Science pilot and continues to receive the PS Science program in grades one through three.
PS Science currently serves more than 1,600 children living at or below the poverty line at William Green Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, John Muir Elementary School, Saint Raphael School, Saint Anne School, M. L. King Elementary School, La Tijera School and Warren Lane Elementary.
