Crossroads’ Unforgettable Season Ends in State Finals

Girls volleyball team finishes campaign with five-set thriller.
The Crossroads varsity girls volleyball team made history Saturday, competing in the CIF state title match to finish off one of the School’s most successful athletic campaigns ever.

The Roadrunners put together a valiant performance in the Division III finals against Lafayette's Acalanes High School at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, forcing a fifth set after dropping the first two frames of a tightly contested match.

Unfortunately for Crossroads, the match ended in a heartbreaking 3-2 (25-13, 28-26, 22-25, 17-25, 16-14) defeat after a thrilling final game that featured four ties and seven lead changes.

“We all left the arena feeling incredibly proud of our girls and their amazing accomplishment this season,” Head of School Bob Riddle said. “They won their division, they won the regional championship and they came in second in the entire state of California! What a proud moment for Crossroads.”

It marked the end of a record-setting season for the Roadrunners (27-5), who secured a CIF Southern Section Division 6 title last month. They entered the state finals on the heels of claiming a CIF state regional championship with a 3-1 win over Mission Hills Alemany.

Coach Aaron Wexler’s squad became the first-ever girls team at Crossroads to advance into state championship competition.

“I hope that every player and every coach feels a great sense of pride in what they achieved this year, going further than any volleyball team, boys or girls, and going further than any girls team, in Crossroads history,” Bob said. “Our school spirit has never been stronger.”
