Girls Learn About Architecture and Construction Careers

Panel of women in male-dominated fields provides insight.
On April 23, the Upper School hosted a lunchtime panel discussion about careers for women in architecture, landscape architecture, construction and project management. The goal was to expose girls in the Upper School to career paths they might not have considered before.

The panelists were Mandi Roberts, an architect with Frederick Fisher and Partners; Robin Carmichael, a landscape architect with Pamela Burton and Company; and Dori Hauser, project manager with Morley Builders. The panel was moderated by Barbara Whitney, Crossroads’ director of finance and operations. The panelists each gave a summary of their college and graduate work, their early job choices and changes of path that led to their current jobs.

One of the attendees was sophomore Emma Kirby, who is part of a team of Upper School students working to earn a Lemelson-MIT grant to invent a technical solution to California’s drought. “The landscape architect talked to us about the drought to help us with our work,” Emma shares. “I really like engineering. I’m fascinated by women in industries that are male-dominated.”
