Students Raise $23,000 for Pediatric Cancer Research

Middle School concert inspired by classmates with cancer.
Dozens of Crossroads seventh-graders put on a sold-out concert on April 10 to support pediatric cancer research at UCLA. “Chords 2 Cure” demonstrated student solidarity with three Crossroads classmates diagnosed with cancer. The fundraiser, which was held at New Roads School’s Moss Theater and included a silent auction, raised $23,000 for cancer research at UCLA. The rollicking show included performances by Middle School bands, ensembles and solo acts, which entertained the audience with everything from classic jazz to current pop.

The event was the brainchild of seventh-graders Lucas Wurman and Juliette Pegula. “When [one of our classmates] was diagnosed with liver cancer, it was a hard time for him,” Lucas shares. “We watched him impress everyone around him with his strength and determination. Ever since then, Juliette and I always wanted to make a difference for kids with cancer.”

Adds Juliette, “The experience was so rewarding because everyone put their hearts and spirits into the music. We learned along the way how important it is to create awareness for pediatric cancer. It felt great to know were making a difference.”
