Speaker Discusses Race and Privilege

Dr. Tyrone C. Howard addresses Crossroads faculty, staff and parents.
Renowned author and educator Dr. Tyrone C. Howard visited Crossroads to discuss matters pertaining to race, privilege and education. His presentation is part of Crossroads’ ongoing commitment to a diverse and inclusive school community.

On Feb. 17, Dr. Howard addressed faculty and staff in the afternoon and parents in the evening. He discussed the disparity in expectations, discipline and outcomes for white students versus students of color in American schools. With an eye toward cultural sensitivity, Dr. Howard recommended approaches that parents and teachers can take to support and engage all students and help them succeed in school and in life.

Dr. Howard is an associate professor for the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and director of Center X at UCLA, which works to transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable and humane society. His research is concerned with issues of access, equity and increasing the academic achievement of culturally diverse students.
