Sophomore Organizes Charity Dance Event

Proceeds benefit a nonprofit that supports foster care youth.
Sophia Deutsch ’17 had an idea. A longtime volunteer in support of foster care youth, she was eager to merge her desire to give back with her passion for dance. Sophia felt inspired by Crossroads’ Touring Company, which performs one-act musicals in places like homeless shelters and rehabilitation centers. “I always thought Crossroads dancers should reach out to people, as well,” she explains. “What better way than to start an annual dance performance incorporating schools throughout LA benefiting foster youth?”

The result is Dance for Change, a benefit performance held on Feb. 20 at New Roads School’s Moss Theater in Santa Monica. Dancers from schools including Crossroads, New Roads, Windward, Archer and Beverly Hills High School performed predominantly contemporary and jazz pieces.

The proceeds from the performance went to Cee Forward, an initiative of the Coalition for Engaged Education. Cee Forward provides individualized support to foster care youth through college and beyond. The Coalition for Engaged Education was founded by Paul Cummins, a co-founder of Crossroads and its first headmaster.
