Middle Schoolers Take Part in Sports Spectacular

Student-athletes shine in annual soccer/basketball competition.
Despite the rain and cold, members of the Crossroads community from Elementary through Upper School came out in force to cheer on the Middle School winter sports teams at the Dec. 12 Sports Spectacular. The soccer teams faced Brentwood School while the basketball teams took on Culver City Middle School. All of the teams did a stellar job while being cheered on enthusiastically by the Roadrunner crowds. Each basketball game began with the singing of the national anthem by talented Middle School singers. Middle School dancers performed at halftime both on the court and on the field.

Boys Basketball Red lost 44-32. Both teams executed some fantastic layups, intelligent plays and skilled moves. Team Red shook off the nerves and excitement of performing in front of a large home-team crowd for the first time this season. They kept the match close throughout the game, but just could not close the deficit for the win.

Girls Basketball Royal lost 33 to 26. Despite their ultimate loss, the Girls Royal players created plenty of scoring opportunities throughout their game and had more open shots at the basket than Culver City, thanks to their speed, strong defense, rebounding and overall ability to make smart plays.

Boys Basketball Royal won 36 to 30. Defense and pressure kept the Roadrunners ahead in the Royal game where the boys maintained a 12-point lead throughout the majority of regulation. The Roadrunners were able to create opportunities amid some very tight coverage. In the final minute of the game, Culver City was sinking shot after unanswered shot; however, the Roadrunner’s lead was too great and defense too tough for Culver to prevail.

Girls Soccer won 5-1. Under a fantastic sky and occasional showers, Crossroads came out with a major victory over Brentwood.  The girls maintained control of the ball, rarely even allowing Brentwood to play with it on their side of the field. Crossroads players were in the right place throughout the game, delivering solid chances to one another and backing each other up.

Boys Soccer Royal won 5-2. Despite the rain and cold, the bleachers were packed with Crossroads fans who cheered on the impressive display of talent found on the Middle School Royal Soccer Team. The Roadrunners put on an extraordinary display of ball control and manipulation as they placed some stunning goals into the net.
