Graphic Novelists Visit Elementary School

Students ask questions, provide creative inspiration to authors.
Third- and fourth-graders quizzed Raina Telgemeier and Kazu Kibuishi about their writing processes and sources of inspiration during a lively visit to the Elementary School by these two graphic novelists. The students, many clutching their own copies of Raina’s autobiographical works “Smile” and “Sisters” and books in Kazu’s “Amulet” series, were invited to shout out a visual image for Raina and Kazu to create in real time. Raina drew a cat on a beach and Kazu sketched on a tablet using a design program.

Third Grade East students later wrote thank-you letters to Kazu in graphic novel format. Later in November, Elementary School Librarian Valerie Jauregui will offer a Mini-Comics Open Lab for third- through fifth-graders to make their own mini-comics.
