School Holds Annual Community Service Fair

Former Crossroads student and Food Forward founder is featured speaker.
Crossroads’ founding commitment of “service to the community” was on full display Sept. 26. The morning kicked off with a community service assembly attended by the entire Upper School. Students took to the stage to talk about their volunteer experiences with the crisis hotline Teen Line and the Crossroads clubs Care for Cancer, Teens United Live, which supports music education, and Half the Sky, which advocates for women’s rights.

Featured speaker and alumnus Rick Nahmias spoke about his hunger-fighting nonprofit Food Forward and the value of his Crossroads volunteer experience. “It set me up for some really great things ahead,” Rick said. “Volunteering helps you get outside of yourself and your comfort zone.”

Later that day, Middle and Upper School students learned about various volunteer opportunities at a community service fair held in the Alley. Representatives were on hand from organizations including the Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC), Heal the Bay, Garden School Foundation and the dog adoption agency Karma Rescue.
