Students Take Part in Coastal Cleanup Day

EOE Community Service trip puts trash in its place.
Junk food wrappers, soda cans and bottle caps were just some of the debris that Crossroads kayakers plucked out of Marina Del Rey bay on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Environmental and Outdoor Education (EOE) Community Service trip supported the international Coastal Cleanup Day, one of the largest single-day volunteer events in the world.

Before they hit the water, EOE instructor Dan Eldridge provided the 10 Middle Schoolers with a lesson in kayaking fundamentals and paddling safety. Armed with rubber gloves, fishing nets and recyclable bags, the students and three EOE instructors spent 90 minutes kayaking around the bay, collecting trash.

When they returned to shore, students helped sort the garbage they’d collected into bins. All told, volunteers collected over 75 pounds of trash on the Marina Del Rey bay, including over 100 plastic straws.
