Crossroads Alumni Make Strong Showing at U.S. Open

Class of 2010 shines in hardcourt Grand Slam tennis tournament.
Crossroads alumni Nicole Gibbs ’10 and Clay Thompson ’10 both made strong showings at the 2014 U.S Tennis Tournament, held Aug. 25-Sept. 8 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Nicole advanced to the third round of the tournament before falling to Flavia Pennetta, who was seeded 11th. Nicole, who was a wild card, earned her first-ever U.S. Open main draw victory with her win over Caroline Garcia from France. Nicole followed that match with a second-round upset over No. 23 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia. Nicole, who is the daughter of former Crossroads teacher Paul Gibbs, earned her third consecutive appearance into the tournament by winning the 2014 USTA Pro Circuit Challenge.

Clay Thompson made it to the third round of the American Collegiate Invitational at the Open. The inaugural event, which took place Sept. 4-6, offered college standouts a chance to receive main draw wildcards into the 2015 U.S. Open. Clay, who is a student at UCLA, was seeded No. 2 and was one of only eight men selected to compete in the new invitational. He beat Jared Hiltzik from the University of Illinois in straight sets in the quarterfinals before falling to Ohio State’s Peter Kobelt, 7-6, 7-6 in the semis.

The U.S. Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year.
