Middle School Teacher Receives Fellowship in D.C.

Oksana Godoy spent a week exploring the Civil War.
Middle School Core teacher Oksana Godoy was one of 20 educators from 15 states selected to participate in the Ford’s Theatre Catherine B. Reynolds Civil War Washington Teacher Fellows Summer Institute. The program was held in Washington, D.C., from July 13-18.

During the fellowship, Oksana explored the Civil War through some of its most notable people and places. She and her fellow teachers learned about Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and the city of Washington during the Civil War, and visited historic sites including Ford’s Theatre, the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, the Tudor Place Historic House and Garden and President Lincoln’s Cottage. They also took part in a variety of virtual tours and performances.

In addition, teachers learned new strategies to hone students’ oratory skills and engage them in place-, object- and performance-based lessons.
