CROSSROADS SCHOOL CAME INTO BEING IN 1971 to provide a new approach to education. It was founded by a small group of educators and parents, led by co-founders Dr. Paul Cummins and Dr. Rhoda Makoff, whose goal was to provide a diverse student body a coeducational college preparatory education combining academic excellence with a comprehensive fine and performing arts program, community service, athletic challenge, and environmental education.

TODAY, THE SCHOOL CONSISTS OF TWO CAMPUSES, SERVING 1130 STUDENTS. The school has an operating budget of over $25 million and provides $3 million in financial aid to applicant families. The Norton Campus at 1715 Olympic Boulevard houses Crossroads Elementary School (K-5), the Admissions Office, and the Crossroads K-12 Athletic Facility. The 21st Street Campus at 1714 21st Street is the site of Crossroads Middle (6-8) and Upper Schools (9-12)and K-12 administration offices.

CROSSROADS IS A DISTINCTLY PROGRESSIVE SCHOOL offering an intellectually demanding and creative curriculum within a supportive, personal environment that has at its base the notion of safety, equity, and inclusion for all. Crossroads strives to help each student develop a personal commitment to learning, a respect for independent thinking, a sense of social commitment, an appreciation of the valuable traditions of the past, and a concern for the future. Crossroads students are provided a spectrum of program opportunities including visual arts, literature, language, music, math, drama, history, science, dance, athletics, computer science, community service, and environmental/experiential education.

CROSSROADS SCHOOL OFFERS ENROLLMENT BASED ON APPLICATION, and all admitted students are accorded the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of color, national or ethnic origin, religion or creed, gender, or sexual orientation in the administration of its educational policies, financial aid programs, or athletic and other programs. Crossroads seeks students with a range and depth of interests and talents. In addition, the school seeks to provide classes which balance boy/girl ratios, ethnic and socio-economic diversity, and heterogeneity in skills, talents, and interests.

CROSSROADS IS ACCREDITED BY the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Crossroads is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), the College Board, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Western Association of College Admission Counseling (WACAC), the Network for Performing and Visual Arts Schools, the Cum Laude Society, A Better Chance, and the Independent School Alliance for Minority Affairs.
