THE GOAL OF THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS is to ensure that the K-12 student population of over 1,100 reflects the school philosophy as broadly as possible. There is no "typical" Crossroads student because the school seeks students (and families) with diverse backgrounds, talents, and interests. In addition to evaluating individual merit and the appropriateness of a Crossroads education for each student, the composition of each class and what a student will bring to that dynamic, is also considered.
MIDDLE SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS: Crossroads Middle School consists of 330 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who work with 75 full and part-time faculty members. On the average, Crossroads accepts approximately 25 new sixth graders and 45 to 55 new seventh graders into the school each year. New students come to the school from as many as 50 different public and independent schools. The ideal candidate for admission into the Middle School is a student who is self-motivated, passionate about learning, and interested in self-development.
WHEN TO APPLY: The main points of entry to Crossroads are kindergarten and grades six and seven. In all other grades, spaces are available only by attrition. It is always possible that no openings will occur in those grades.
APPLICATIONS FOR GRADES ONE THROUGH TWELVE are due on a specified date in
December of the year prior to entry. After the
deadline date, interested families should call the
admissions office about late applications.
TOUR AND INTERVIEW: Upon receipt of the application, families are scheduled for a tour and interview. Parents, but not students, are interviewed for spaces in kindergarten though fifth grade. Students are interviewed for grades six through twelve, and parents spend time with an admissions representative asking any questions they may have.
ADMISSIONS TESTING: The Independent School Entrance Examination is required of all applicants to grades six through twelve.
DECISIONS: All required teacher and administrative recommendations, transcripts, current grades, and testing information must be received by a specified date in early February. Admissions files are read by faculty members and the Admissions Committee. After each file has been individually considered, the Admissions Committee takes great care in composing an entering class that fulfills the goals set forth in the school philosophy. Admissions decisions are mailed at the end of March on a date agreed upon by the members of the Los Angeles Consortium of Independent Schools.
FINANCIAL AID: One of Crossroads founding principles was to develop a student population of social, economic, and racial diversity. Crossroads' Founding Board mandated that a minimum of 10% of the annual budget be devoted to providing financial assistance. This has been honored and, in fact, increased throughout the school's history. This commitment to diversity guarantees that students from a wide range of backgrounds will continue to have access to a Crossroads education.
FINANCIAL AID and admission applications should be completed at the same time. Admissions decisions are made first and are independent of aid decisions. Screening for financial assistance is thorough and based on demonstrated need. Financial aid funds are limited, and the school is not able to grant aid to all applicants who demonstrate need. Financial aid distribution is reviewed annually. If financial need continues, and if academic and behavioral performance are satisfactory, the aid award generally continues until graduation.
