OPTIONS
Middle school students are at an age when they begin to see the many possibilities that the world has to offer. It is a safe time in their lives when they can try new opportunities without having to worry about failure.
THE MIDDLE SCHOOL OPTIONS PROGRAM is a daily forty-minute block that allows students to pursue topics of interest that are not normally included in the regular schedule of classes. The faculty creates and offers courses that highlight passions they want to share and explore with their students. Before the start of the school year, students select courses for both the fall and spring semesters. Courses usually meet twice a week for a half-year. On days that students are not scheduled in a course, they will get a jump-start on their homework in a silent study hall. As part of the Middle School program, Options courses are evaluated according to student participation, effort and enthusiasm, and comprehension of the topic studied. Academic subject tutorials are also available to the student who needs reinforcement or remediation.
SOME OF THE OPTIONS COURSES offered are: Activities, Art Club, Assemblage, Chorus, Cooking, Creative Writing, Debate, French, HARP (Animal Rights), Community In Action, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Workshop, Journalism, Knitting, Latin Club (JCL), Music Fundamentals, Paper to Celluloid, Rock Climbing, Shakespeare, Spanish, Student Council, Core Tutorial, Math Tutorial, Latin Tutorial, and Science Tutorial.
