MATH
The Middle School math program was designed to give students the fundamentals they need while providing opportunities to explore real world mathematics through a variety of projects. There are three main components to the program: the Glencoe textbook series, ability tracking of students, and a number of group and individual math application projects.

IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, there are six levels of math in three grades. These levels range from sixth grade arithmetic to eighth grade advanced algebra. Each level overlaps within the scope and sequence and ensures that the students are simultaneously provided with reinforcement of concepts from prior levels and exposed to new material skills and concepts. To assure proper placement for each student, the Math Department administers a placement test in late May or early June. This allows us to place the student in the appropriate level. Teacher recommendations also factor into this placement. There is some flexibility though, and a student may be moved up or down in the early part of the year depending on their performance in the class.

THE GLENCOE TEXTBOOK SERIES approaches mathematics with an emphasis on integrating algebra, geometry, measurement, proportional reasoning, statistics, probability, technology, and problem solving. Relevant, real-life applications, and interdisciplinary connections are a part of every lesson. New materials and a continuous review of previous materials provide the student with a solid foundation and retention of concepts.

IN ADDITION TO TEXTBOOKS, teachers use several different types of projects and logical puzzles to introduce real-world applications of mathematics. Recent examples include building bridges, self-designed floor plans, and three-dimensional scale models. Tessellations are explored and the students discover the use of the Golden Ratio in art, architecture, and nature.
