FIFTH GRADE / KINDERGARTEN BUDDIES: Fifth grade students welcome kindergarten children to the school. These partners meet throughout the school year for shared reading times and for field trips, as well as at any other opportunity they may find to catch up with one another.
NEW / OLD BUDDIES: Each new student from first through fifth grades is paired with an "old" buddy who is responsible for introducing the new student to the school and taking care
of him or her during the first few weeks. A Buddy event is held prior to the opening of school.
CHPHP: All children in second through fifth grades are invited to work at CHPHP (Children Helping Poor and Homeless People) as an optional opportunity to participate in the community beyond the school. Small groups of children work with CHPHP one day a week during the school year. Many children continue to help during vacation months.
FAMILY GROUPS: The student population of the school is divided into twenty-five family groups of twelve to thirteen children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The purpose of family groups is to knit the community together "family style" and to foster the connection between adults and children in settings other than the classroom. An adult member of the school community directs each family group.
FIELD TRIPS: The Elementary School sponsors excursions to museums, art exhibits, workshops, concerts, historical sites, community agencies, and other schools. Trips planned are usually related to social studies or service and are not trips customarily taken by families.
ONE VOICE: One Voice is a community agency that Crossroads has chosen to support. Each Elementary School class participates with this agency in a unique way by sending care packages to One Voice Scholarship students in college, who are away from home for the first time. In addition, Crossroads families eagerly volunteer their time during the holidays to participate in the One Voice Food Packaging Program.
STUDENT COUNCIL: Student representatives in first through fifth grades meet on Thursday mornings to discuss student issues and plan community events. Student Council minutes are published in the school's weekly bulletin. The fifth grade takes leadership of Student Council. There are two terms for Student Council per year.
