THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY contains 6800 books - over 1500 picture books and easy fiction, 1800 novels for middle and upper elementary students, and 3500 information and reference books. The library is equipped with a computer system that manages the circulation and cataloging of books and allows students to quickly find the titles they seek. All classes come to the library regularly for formal instruction, and children may drop in at other times during the week. The two goals of the library program are to foster a lifelong love of reading and to teach students how to use the library as a resource.

IN THE EARLY GRADES the library program centers on literature. The children listen to many kinds of stories throughout the year. They hear poems and jokes and then make up their own. They learn where to find their favorite authors. They discover that books about dinosaurs, about drawing, or even about poetry can be found in both the information and fiction sections of the library.

MIDDLE GRADE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS understand how materials in a library are organized by learning about the Dewey Decimal System. They use encyclopedias and other reference materials for reports on animals, people, and current issues. They can find the books they need by using the computerized card catalog. They read stories from many genres: fantasy, mystery, historical fiction, and science fiction.

BY THE TIME STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THE FIFTH GRADE, they have learned how to use atlases, almanacs, biographical dictionaries, and indexes to find information for their research reports. They have read and enjoyed many wonderful authors.

THE LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST and several parents orchestrate the annual Authors' Program. Guest authors come to school to talk with children about many aspects of life as an author. Past guests have included Don and Audrey Wood, Ray Bradbury, Gary Soto, Lisa See, Carolyn See, Jean Little, Mem Fox, and many other authors of note.
